Lindal Fisheries, Dramm Corporation and Dan's Fish Sign Pledge to prevent waste and promote the sustainable use of Great Lakes fish (Door and Kewaunee Counties, Wisconsin) - Three more local companies-Lindal Fisheries, Dramm Corporation and Dan's Fish, Inc.--signed on to the "100% Great Lakes Fish Pledge" today, publicly committing to using 100% of each commercially caught Great Lakes fish productively by 2025. As part of the pledge, the companies will also help communicate to other companies in the fish supply chain about opportunities for innovative applications for fish byproducts including fertilizer, protein, marine collagen, leather, or other new, high-value products. These three companies join Henriksen Fisheries, Baileys Harbor Fish Company and J&M Fisheries that signed the pledge a few weeks ago, bringing participation from Door and Kewaunee Counties to six companies. 20 companies overall have now signed the pledge. This pledge is part of the 100% Great Lakes Fish initiative created by the Conference of Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers (GSGP), an organization representing the Governors of the Great Lakes States and the Canadian Premiers of Ontario and Quebec. ""With six companies working to expand and develop new products, Door and Kewaunee Counties are quickly becoming regional leaders in fully using commercially caught fish from the Great Lakes," David Naftzger, GSGP Executive Director said. "The commitment of these companies will help create a more sustainable fishery with benefits for our economy, our environment and our people." The Great Lakes are home to a sizeable commercial fishery, but only the fillets of these fish are usually eaten while the remaining 60% of the fish is often relegated to inexpensive uses or discarded. The project and pledge are the first of its kind in the region. They build on the work Iceland pioneered with their "100% fish strategy" and with other species elsewhere globally. The utilization rate of the Icelandic cod has increased from 40%, when utilization was almost exclusively filets to eat, to more than 90%, including high-value byproducts such as skin and collagen. These byproducts are processed into a variety of food and non-food products, raising the value of each fish. "My family has been involved with commercial fishing on Wisconsin waters for over 100 years. We do not take the opportunity to do so, or this resource for granted," Dan Lindal, owner of Lindal Fisheries, said. "We are strong advocates for the preservation and sustainability of the fishery, and consider this pledge to be a privilege and a great business opportunity to share ideas and technology with other like-minded businesses."
